Good Morning, Oppo.
60s car ads were strange to begin with, but I’m trying to figure out the cannon and battlements in the background.

I prefer to think of it as a cannon bravely defending his’n’hers outhouses.
But more seriously, my guess would be that was the “flavor” of a larger tableau talking about American
pride and tradition
yada yada
and the ad got cut down and kept the cannon.

The artwork has a serious Schoolhouse Rock vibe to it.

I wonder if it started as being to do with the centennial of the end of the civil war in the US?

All necrotic battleships need cannons to fight off the younger generation of even bigger and more stupid shitboxes...why didn't you know this?

I’d blame the Canadians.
(It’s a Canadian Pontiac)

Well, the Civil War ended in 1865, and this is a 1967, so....

1967 was Canada's centennial. That might be the answer, but the car is a '68.

Well, that probably explains it then. There’s a lot of history to do with cannons in that part of the world. I’ve always wanted to take a tour up the East and visit locations from the War of 1812, the war nobody (in America, at least) knows about. I visited Ft. Ticonderoga when I was very young, and my Mom grew up in Burlington on Lake Champlain. Lots of forgotten naval history up that way.
